You act oblivious as the decoy wallet is lifted from your pocket. Once the deed is done, you inconspicuously glance behind to see the back of the culprit as they prepare to casually slip away. They have short dark hair and a slender build, dressed modest but fairly unlike the usual around these parts. Regardless, before they take their first step towards escape, your hand slides back and discreetly lifts the pistol that was holstered at their side.
Unaware, the thief shuffles away and across the tavern to a corner to inspect their haul. You see as they turn that the culprit is a young woman - no, a teenager. Fresh-faced, tomboyish. Certainly not someone you've ever seen before. Though rare, it's not unheard of to see such youth in Havenhall - you were one, once.
She takes out and peers into the wallet, which you know to be empty except for one little note. You see the disappointment and bewilderment clear on her face as she takes out the paper. Her jaw drops as she reads it. She looks over to you in disbelief, and shrinks as you meet her gaze. You flash her a shit-eating grin and show off your own loot. Immediately she looks down to where her pistol should have been to verify that, in fact, it was not there. She looks back to you in shock and awe, the frantic blur of a thousand thoughts behind her eyes.
Humorous as it all is, you do feel a slight tinge of pity for the kid. You nod your head to the side, gesturing for her to come as you stand and walk over to an open area of wall on the other side of the tavern from her. Still rather smug, you lean back there and watch her walk of shame. Weaving through the crowds and tables, she approaches anxiously, stopping just a few feet away.
"Tsk, tsk, tsk," you tut, shaking your head. "First day on the job?"
"Um, kind of," she mumbles.
"Does your mother know what you're up to?" you lilt sarcastically.
To your surprise, she visibly sinks and stares down to the side. "No," the thief answers. "She doesn't."
You're dumbfounded at her innocent sincerity. She wasn't supposed to seriously answer that. It's as though this kid has no awareness that she's in pirate town, talking to a pirate.
You can put two and two together that this kid is here because of some misfortune with her family. Maybe you can learn why she ended up in this criminal cesspool... not that it's any of your business. But you are curious.
The joke is just too easy. Though maybe it's also part of the rude awakening she needs to remind her of the kind of situation she's in. She needs to toughen up and mind what she says to strangers around here - the folks of Havenhall tend to be much more malicious than you.
